Review of Ruin and Rising

I am giving this book 4/5 stars! I enjoyed reading this book, and I do think this trilogy finished strong. This has to be my favorite book out of the three. The Darkling didn't show up as much as I would have liked, which sucked because he is one of my favorite characters. I wish we could have seen more of him and that his personality (not just the villain side of him) was unpacked more. We got to see a little more of that part of him, but I think there could have been more. (This applies to the entire trilogy) The ending could have been more climatic. It felt lacking in suspense and didn't pull at my emotions the way I would have liked. I felt more emotion when the search for the bird was completed and for what happened after the climax than I did the actual climax. The epilogue pulled at my emotions even more than those though.  It seemed a little repetitive when looking at the trilogy as a whole. Things were continually brought up about the past, the same moments ...

Review of Rebel

I am giving this book 3.5/5 stars. This book was more interesting than Prodigy , but not as interesting as Legend . Maybe more like Champion , in my honest opinion. I wasn't really interested in the beginning. It went slow and didn't feel like it was starting until around half way through the book. The beginning gives a lot of information on Antarctica's technology (which I was glad to learn more about) and I loved seeing how Day and Eden work through their past traumas and relationship struggles. I liked seeing how the Republic is handling things after war and what happens to Day and June after the events at the end of Champion . It goes over different types of relationship tensions and how their lives have changed and are going. I think it could have been shortened at least a little bit though. - SMALL SPOILER IN NEXT PARAGRAPH - We don't see Eden's bullies after the Level system is shut down. I found myself wondering what was happening to them and how the...

Review of Serpent & Dove

I am giving this book 5/5 stars!  Okay so I finished The Queen of Nothing before reading this book and it definitely left me in a big book hangover. After a week or so I knew the only way to get out of it or push it along would be to read a book that I will love equally as much or more, so I picked this book off my shelf... It has made me go from one book hangover to another, and I'm not even completely finished with the last one! I wasn't even half way through this book when I began to really click with the characters. It happened very quickly and without my knowledge. I love Ansel, Coco, Lou, and Reid. So much character development occurred, especially for Lou and Reid. It happened in a way that made me love them even more. I have to admit, at first I didn't know how I felt about Reid. I didn't think I would end up liking him as much as I do, and that's what I call good character development! An event occurred close to the middle of the book that had me ...

Review of The Queen of Nothing (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

This review is the version that  CONTAINS SPOILERS!  Proceed with caution.  You have been warned. I am giving this book 5/5 stars! GUYS I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S OVER! I DON'T WANT IT TO END! I really enjoyed reading this book, and I wish there were more books to come. I definitely think that there could be more if Holly Black wanted to make it happen. I live for Jude and Cardan's relationship, and their own personalities. I love these two so much. They are so skillfully crafted and have many layers to their personalities. There is more than just the sad, drunk boy, more than just the strong, power hungry girl. Their relationship grows in such a great way in this book. It tore me up!  Many questions that had been unanswered in the second book are answered in this book, and I like that she brings up events from the first two books, like when Cardan is staring at her while two magical folk are on him and kissing him. I feel like there are questions I ...

This review is the SPOILER FREE version. Their relationship grows (in a good or a bad way, you will find out) in this book and it tore me up! Many questions that had been unanswered in the second book are answered in this book. I feel like there are questions I still have that this book brought up, but it's nothing big that will eat at me for all eternity... I like the first half, but I really like the second half of the book. So much happene...

Review of Gilded Rose: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling

I received this book after telling the author I would love to Beta Read her book, which was in response to her newsletter. It releases November 27, 2019! I am giving this book 5/5 stars! I didn't know what to expect from this book. Just before starting it, I had finished another Beauty and the Beast retelling ( A Curse So Dark and Lonely )that had quickly made it to the top of my list of favorite retellings. I didn't expect this book to be as great as that, but it was! Gilded Rose: A Beauty and the Beast Retelling quickly made it to the top of my list and is now one of my favorite retellings.  The Beast is one of a kind in my eyes. He seemed more demonic and I honestly loved that. It made me think of Persephone and Hades. I hadn't read a book where the beast was portrayed this way, and it left me wondering how on earth the author was going to have Amicia fall in love with someone like that.  The first chapter did a great job at setting up the story and getting i...

Review of A Curse So Dark and Lonely

I'm giving this book 4/5 stars! This book definitely met my expectations (considering there was sooo much hype), but it also took a turn I didn't expect. I was expecting a story similar to many of the other Beauty and the Beast retellings where they are a monster 24/7 and there are cursed people that may or may not be objects (kind of like Beast: a Tale of Love and Revenge by Lisa Jensen). I was pleasantly surprised to see that was not the case. It definitely has its own original twist that makes it feel like I haven't read this story before, even though I know the tale it is based off of. It was refreshing and I think I enjoyed it a lot more because of that. A Curse So Dark and Lonely is definitely the best retelling I have EVER read.  This story hooked me right from the start and it got straight to the point. It didn't take forever describing anything and I really enjoyed that. The author did a great job at not information dumping and keeping everything neat...

Review of By Your Side

I'm giving this book 4/5 stars! This was my first Kasie West book, and I have to say I absolutely enjoyed it! I didn't expect the book to go the way it did, and I don't mind that one bit. I like the story and the route it took.  It was the light read I needed. There was nothing heavy, the writing was easy to read and not complicated, and it didn't keep me *too* much on my toes. Perfect book for reading when you have school. I was able to finish this really quickly. If I wanted to, I could have finished it the day I started and had a bit of hours left in daylight. The romance was very satisfactory. It kept me wanting more from Autumn and Dax, and held it out in front of me like a carrot on a stick. I liked how clear it was when it came to who was more fit for Autumn to date since there is a (kind of) love triangle.  There were times where I was surprised Autumn handled situations the way she did. I had expected her to confront how a character made her feel, ...

Review of The Demon Tamer

I am giving this book 4/5 stars! I received a copy from the author for an honest review. Thank you Brancati for the great book!! There is a lot of different cultures that get a spotlight in this story, and I think that has to be one of my favorite parts. I love being able to learn about other cultures, and Brancati clearly did his research. It added a special part to the story that allows the reader to feel as though they are experiencing it and are there, too. Although I was confused at first, it didn't take long for me to start understanding what was happening. There were times were I went back to being confused for a split second though, and I am pretty sure that is because I kept needing to put it away for class. I do not believe I would have been as confused if I had started the book on a day where I had nothing planned.  If descriptions aren't your thing, and you would rather have a book that gets straight to the point and doesn't waste time, this is the book...

Review of Rise of the Phoenix

I am giving this book 4/5 stars! I received a copy of the book from the author. Thank you again Isajanyan for the copy and writing a great book!!  If you like books with the chosen one, born solely for this event type of books, this is the book for you! This book was creative from the beginning with the brilliant writing style. In some movies, there is a prophecy or story from the past that they will describe and talk about. This book was written like someone was telling the prophecy, and I found that creative because this whole book starts with just that.  There was a lot of information in the beginning, it was a bit overwhelming and may have contributed to me having a hard time getting into it at first. That also may have contributed to me feeling as though some things were being repeated. While that may be the case, as I continued reading it got better. I was starting to get attached to the characters and story. So I highly recommend sticking around and reading it...

Review of The Veil of Trust

I received an ARC since I am on the author's street team. I am giving this book 5/5 stars! Although this book is another one where Brynaa is gathering more information and is moving the story along, I found it to be very interesting. Evans was able to make it eventful and entertaining without a dull moment and I think that can be a hard thing to come by. In this story, we see more characters from the past come back and play a larger role in this story. I loved this so much. I think it brought the whole vibe of the book to feel more like the first book. It made it feel more connected to the story. If you didn't particularly enjoy the second book as much as the first, don't stop there. Read this book and you won't be disappointed! We see more problems and struggles arise, and while those are sometimes used to make the story longer and could be taken out, these don't fall into that category. They have a purpose, and that is to move the story along. It allows...

Review of Siege and Storm

I am giving this book 2/5 stars. I don't want this review to be completely negative, because it's a waste of time to talk about what I didn't like about a book when I know some people (including myself) only look at reviews for positives. I will talk about what I liked, and what I disliked, equally. I was really hoping I would like this book more than the last, but sadly, I didn't. This book suffered from middle book syndrome. It's lacking. It was quick in the beginning, which brought me to think it was going to be better than it was, but it slowed down a lot to where there was basically nothing going on. It didn't pick back up until the end, so I am hoping that the next book will be at a much faster pace. (I have heard people say that their favorite book of the three in The Shadow and Bone Trilogy is the last book, so I am hanging out until I finish this trilogy!) It delved deeper into relationships and magic, which is something that I really enjoyed ...
